LONG GROVE, Ill., Jan. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to keep athletes on top of their freshness game, Fresh Wave announces the launch of Fresh Wave Sport, a line of natural odor-eliminators developed with the needs of athletes – professionals, amateurs and weekend warriors alike – at its core.

Using Fresh Wave's green chemistry comprised of natural ingredients – plant oils and water – to defeat odors completely, Fresh Wave Sport goes to work on the toughest odors athletes can throw at it: equipment bags and gym lockers, workout clothes and shoes, even technical base layers.

With products originally developed more than 20 years ago to tackle industrial odors in places like wastewater treatment facilities, paper mills and asphalt plants, Fresh Wave and the new Fresh Wave Sport use no harsh chemicals and no masking fragrances, and unlike competing products, actually eliminate odors instead of covering them up. Among the third-party certifications for safety the products have received, last year's "Design for the Environment" recognition from the Environmental Protection Agency is the most recent, and perhaps the most telling.

"As odors go, athletes are a different breed – moving and sweating, sure, but also concerned about what goes into their bodies, the products they use and how they affect the environment," said Philip M. Coffey, managing director of OMI Industries, the makers of Fresh Wave products. "We developed Fresh Wave Sport with them in mind, a naturally-derived odor eliminator that's as safe as water."

No stranger to the athletic arena, Fresh Wave is an advertising sponsor of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks' equipment management team uses Fresh Wave products in the locker rooms and the laundry; the hilarity of their odor issues come to life in several Fresh Wave commercials, viewable on the Blackhawks website.

"From athletes to parents, we hear the same thing: 'Does this really work on hockey gear, or soccer cleats or batting helmets?' And the answer is a resounding, 'Yes!'" continued Coffey. "Producing a product line that would specifically address sport-related odor issues was a natural extension for our brand."

The Fresh Wave Sport line is comprised of Fresh Wave Sport Crystal Gel, a continuous-release product that works with ambient airflow; Fresh Wave Sport Spray, for fast-acting odor removal from fabrics, surfaces and the air; Fresh Wave Sport Fresh Packs to attack odors in shoes, gym bags and other contained areas; and Fresh Wave Sport Fresh Wash for use in every laundry load of apparel, towels and more. The natural chemistry found in Fresh Wave Sport won't affect the wicking properties of the synthetic or natural fibers found in today's sport gear.
